Abstract Before the US midterm elections of November 2014, the well-known women’s magazine Cosmopolitan decided to include politics in its contents. The editorial board stated that their aim was to encourage readers to vote and to be engaged with women’s rights advocay in the election process. To that end, Cosmopolitan created a new website, CosmoVotes, with content ranging from discussion of political issues to endorsement of specific candidates who were believed to advance women’s issues. Política económica y redistribución: hacia una nueva arquitectura “pre-distributiva” de la política de rentas

El presente trabajo diseña una política de rentas que podríamos llamar “pre-distributiva”. Su principal objetivo es describir la arquitectura de una política de rentas amplia, que tendría, básicamente, tres pilares: a) el reforzamiento de la capacidad redistributiva de la negociación colectiva, b) el establecimiento de una “norma salarial redistributiva” coordinada a nivel europeo y c) el aumento del Salario Mínimo Interprofesional. Dicha política de rentas podría contribuir a una distribución más equitativa de las rentas primarias del trabajo.
Entrepreneurship Training and Self-Employment among University Graduates

In economies characterized by low labor demand and high rates of youth unemployment, entrepreneurship training has the potential to enable youth to gain skills and create their own jobs. This paper presents experimental evidence on a new entrepreneurship track that provides business training and personalized coaching to university students in Tunisia. Undergraduates in the final year of licence appliquee were given the opportunity to graduate with a business plan instead of following the standard curriculum. This paper looks into institutional and other macro determinants of prevalence of informal dependent employment, as well as informal self-employment, in European countries, using European Social Survey data on work without legal contract in on 30 countries, covering years 2004-2009. Consistently with theoretical predictions, quality of business environment has a significant negative impact on prevalence of both types of informal employment. The share of non-contracted employees is negatively affected by perceived quality of public services and positively related to economic growth. Latvia has recorded sustained GDP and productivity growth since 1997. Yet unemployment rates, despite gradual decrease, have remained high. The paper explores the mysteries of unemployment in Latvia. It analyzes labor flows between employment, unemployment, and nonparticipation and finds the following results: The type of education and the region of residence appear to be the most important determinants of success in finding jobs by the unemployed. The unemployed from ethnic minorities have lower chances to find a job within a year, other things equal, while the difference between genders is not significant. Effects of Raising Minimum Wage: Theory, Evidence and Future Challenges

Abstract Minimum wage is one of the most studied topics in economics. This paper examines some of the most important issues related to the effects of raising minimum wage, based on new contributions in theoretical and empirical research, roughly since 2008. Our purpose was to find in the literature an explanation for the recent raise of minimum wage, in some European Union countries and United States and to identify possible effects of this evolution. Most of the studies point little or no employment response to modest increases in the minimum wage, but we argue there are some other effects to consider.
